A Century ago no one thought about the choice of a career. The son of a farmer became a farmer, a shoe-maker would train his son in his trade and a business-man would leave behind his business to his son. In this way the world went smoothly and very few persons were troubled by the question of the choice of a career. One who though about a career was called a crazy person, against this presently we are living in a quite different world today. Everybody worries about the career he is going to adopt. Even uneducated parents are constantly worrying about the career of their children.
There are number of factors which affect our career, Some children follow the career chosen by their parents. Others select career themselves. In many cases personal likes and dislikes go a long way in the choice of career. Children born in the house of a well-reputed business man naturally take to effort to settle down to a life of secure earning. We have in Pakistan, some very rich families like Adamjee, Saigol etc. Their sons have inherited the business of their fathers. There are people who carve their career for themselves. They have to work hard and fight against heavy odds. All great men in the world are made of this stuff. Take the case of Stalin or Bernard Shaw. Stalin was the son of poor cobbler, yet he became one of the greatest men of our age . Shaw begin his career in poverty. Abraham Lincln was the son of a poor farmer but he became the 16th President of USA, such men are genius and a genius will always make his own way out of poor circumstances.
There are some deciding factors and personal likes and dislikes play important role in the choice of a career for individual. A person with poetic leanings would always like to be poor poet rather be a successful chemist and an efficient civil servant. Take the example of John Keats who, though received a training for becoming a medical surgeon but gave up and choose to be a poet. The life of a chemist or civil servent may be easy but certainly crush his soul and the poet in him would be killed. Children with adventurous nature will be a great success in an independent trade such as Law of Medicine. All great industrialist, who rise from poverty to power, are born with this impulse.
A child who takes courage and confidence should never enter a profession which calls for constant effort. Such a child should go for career like teaching and civil service. He will earn montly salary, regular annual increment and when he retires his pension will be fixed by the department concerned. This man will have an easy and secure life like the bird in a cage but beyond that he will nothing no vision or horizon.
In Our Country, Pakistan , every young man aspires to be a CSS officer. it seems our young men have lost all spirit of adventure. They want a secure job with an easy living and no risk. it is time that more of our young men should enter independent careers where their profession is dignified in itself unless we bring dignity to it. it is not the career that counts but courage that we bring to it.
