Uses of Do and Does in Sentences
Do and Does:
often it is seen that for the beginner of Spoken English, 'do and does present some confusion. With a little attention and some practice, it is very easy to know their correct uses, in negative sentence and question,
Say aloud:
Positive | Negative | Question |
---|---|---|
I run We run. You run. They run. John and Marry run. Trees move | I do not run We do not run. You do not run They do not run John and Marry do not run trees do not move. | Do i run ? Do we run ? Do you run ? Do they run ? Do they run ? Do trees move ? |
I/We/They/Plurals make use if' "do" as helping verb.
Just recollect your '-s' / '-es' rules, there I/We/You/They/Plurals don't take '-s' / '-es' with the verbs
Now say these aloud
Positive | Negative | Question |
---|---|---|
He runs. She runs Mary calls John calls it rains Tree moves | He does not run She does not run Mary doe not call John does not call It does not rain Tree does not move | Does he run ? Does she run ? Does she call ? Does he call ? Does it rain ? Does tree move ? ( or Does it move ?) |
Carefully note that '-s' of the verb is no longer there, when 'does' is used in a sentence.
Do/Does are used in negative sentence and question.
Match correctly the contents of column A and B keeping the 'do/does'rule in mind. You can make any number of correct sentence and check your answer going to back to the rule
Column A | Column B |
---|---|
I We You He She John They John and Mary It | does not go to the shop do not go to the shop do not come to play does not write a letter do not laugh at me does not cook food. do not run does not matter does not call me |
when 'do' is used in a positive sentence, then it means, 'stressing ( or emphasizing ) on what is said, e.g 'I do agree with you' means ' i strongly agree with you' and 'please do come again' means that you have to come second time' , etc such expressions are called emphatic sentences.
Do is also used to give orders/commands and threats as :
Do it now, Do not do it now,
Do you listen Do not dream of doing it

Another way of giving orders/commands and threats as :

For fluency sake , you may use, in your speech. don't in place "do not' and does't in place of "does not".
